The Mutant Rats (ミュータントネズミ,   Myūtanto Nezumi?, lit. Mutant Mouse) are giant rat mutation kaiju created by TriStar Pictures that first appeared in the 1998 Godzilla: The Series episode, Cat and Mouse. Three variants are known: a small, brown-furred type with bald faces and forward-pointing teeth, a larger, bulkier hairless variety, and a giant, black-furred type with multiple sets of eyes.

History

Godzilla: The Series

Cat and Mouse

The Mutant Rats first draw attention to themselves after one attacks a homeless man in New York City. H.E.A.T began to investigate the case but Godzilla was present and began to chase one of the small rats, but it was hidden in the subway and Godzilla withdrew from the place. HEAT tracked the rat to its lair where they encountered a group of poachers and discovered that there was a whole infestation of rats, Nick, Monique and the hunters were captured by them and taken to the place where they stored their food to eat them later, Nick communicates with Randy through NIGEL and they are located by the rest of the team, then they use a flare to scare away the rats and escape, however they are intercepted by the largest before they manage to leave, but fortunately Godzilla, who was fighting with the other rats on the surface, breaks into the place, driving away the largest rat and opening a tunnel between the Manhattan Sea and the rats' den, causing it to flood and the rats to die by drowning.

Monster Wars

One of the Mutant Rats (the biggest one with the dark skin) has survived and joined to Crustaceous Rex, King Cobra, Gusano Gigante, Giant Mutant Bee, Cryptocledius and Giant Bat controlled by the Tachyon Aliens. He disappears after they launch their attack. His final fate is unknown, he is presumed still alive at large or killed in the battle. (Perhaps he was captured and sent to Monster Island but it was never confirmed).
