Emiko Randa (née Matsumoto) is a character created by Legendary Pictures who made her first appearance within the 2023 MonsterVerse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

History

1982

Emiko was a nurse caring for Lee Shaw after he returned from the catastrophic Monarch reconnaissance mission in the Hollow Earth. The panicked Lee held Emiko hostage and demanded to see William Randa before he let her go after reuniting with his honorary nephew, Hiroshi Randa. Hiroshi then comforted Emiko by bringing her flowers and apologizing for the incident, which Emiko accepted.^[2]

1990

Emiko and Hiroshi eventually fell in love and got married before settling in Tokyo. Their son Kentaro was born on July 7th 1990.^[3]

2014

Emiko attended the opening night of Kentaro's art gallery. She admired the sentiment of the art. He didn't take her praises well and ultimately left early. She reminded him that his father was meant to attend. This event was the last time Emiko or Kentaro saw Hiroshi, who went missing around G-Day.^[4]

2015

Emiko lived in an apartment in Tokyo with Kentaro. Emiko was terrified when Cate Randa suddenly appeared in the apartment with Hiroshi's keys. Cate was the Hiroshi's daughter from a secret second family in America. Emiko didn't understand a lot of what transpired because she spoke little English, and relied on Kentaro to translate. She desperately wanted to know if Cate knew what happened to Hiroshi and where he was. Cate left as she was upset by the situation. An alarm went through Tokyo as part of the early warning system for a Godzilla sighting. Emiko and Kentaro found Cate in the street and helped her to a train station where everyone waited for the all clear signal. Cate had a panic attack as she suffered flashbacks to G-Day in San Francisco. Emiko stopped her from leaving and helped her back to a bench, where she consoled the girl. After the all clear signal was given, Emiko invited Cate to have tea, but the girl declined.^[5]

A day later, Kentaro came home and found his mom going through old family photos. His anger caused her to rip up photographs. She encouraged him to join. They had a few moments of happiness. He asked her about Lee Shaw, whom Emiko knew as Hiroshi's honorary uncle. However, Hiroshi didn't discuss Lee or that part of his life much. She wasn't sure if Lee was alive or not. The family were visited by Tim and Michelle Duvall from Monarch. They demanded Bill Randa's files back. Emiko encouraged Kentaro to give them what they wanted. She slipped Lee's photo to him before he left. This was a secret message to go find Lee and not hand over the files. She distracted the operatives long enough for Kentaro to sneak away.^[6]

2017

Emiko was heartbroken and was at the funeral after Hiroshi died.

• Emiko Randa's first name is a reference to Emiko Yamane from the first Godzilla film: Godzilla (1954).
